I made some more 1:12 heads because I didn’t like the first one I made. Now have five total, these two are passable but still need work. This project has been such a challenge for me. Firstly I am so used to sculpting males that I always have male proportions in the back of my mind and that makes my female sculpts look strange if I don’t pay attention. Secondly, the scale! It’s not merely a scale change in the sculpt, but a scale change in the movements I use to sculpt— a tiny sliver of clay taken off in the wrong place, and then asymmetry ahoy. It takes both mental and physical adjustment to get everything right. And a crazy amount of motor control!
The scale also presents a moldmaking challenge— I had to spend about a week enlarging the stringing channels of the prototype just so the tubes would fit, and also tweaking some things so that the walls of the cast wouldn’t be too thin.
Still, it will be worth it in the end. Of all the BJDs I’ve made this is by far my favorite— when I finished the prototype, I carried her around in my pocket for a week.
I like the head on the left.
